I'm leaning towards Attack! (and I have licence SL), but happy to hear from people who've used both.And I'm loving the demo for Analog Pearls, but Pure Mood sounds good too. Any opinions?. Today I bought the EBM set and analogue vs. I make progressive electronic and Berlin school kind of music.
These sets are excellent companions to my analog voltage, alien space and space electronics sets. I was more impressed by the drum synthesizer set, almost bought it, because it doesn't need samples, the attack set would overwrite the samples I'm using for the space electronics set. Also, I have an electribe mx, so I really don't need drum samples in my blofeld. Another set that caught my attention is the monster pack v2, with lots of samples of traditional keyboard instruments: piano, electric organs, mellotron etc. But for now also not essential for me, as I have a roland xp30 full of these kinds of sounds. Here's a link to this set. I also noticed that Monster Pack v2, but I'm a bit suspicious of it.It all looks a bit spammy, and calling it a 'Monster' pack when it only has 64 patches (opposed to all the Waldorf soundsets with 128 patches) is misleading IMHO.And then they have the nerve to charge more for it than the Waldorf soundsets which are known to be excellent.
Even 'on sale' as it is currently, it's still more than a Waldorf soundset full-price. FWIW I've never seen it not on sale for that price.It would want to be unbelievably good to convince me to buy it.
While the demo video sounds decent, there's nothing really compelling in there. I've already got better pianos and organ multis and the other stuff I can take or leave. No doubt making your own sounds is important.But good presets not only provide instant usable sounds but get the creative juices flowing as starting points for experimentation. They also show just what a synth is capable of and how to get there.I'm still pretty new to the Blofeld and I'm constantly surprised by the sheer breadth of sounds it's capable of. Good presets really help me learn more about this amazing little box.And sometimes you just want to dial up a preset you know sounds great and concentrate on actual playing rather than sound design.
There's nothing wrong with that either. I can appreciate where you're coming from. Patches have traditionally been shared for free, and it's good to have that kind of community.But patches, like anything else, require someone's time and effort to create. And great patches can take a lot of time and skill to perfect. That's as worthy of payment as any other time spent developing a product. These soundsets are professionally created by 3rd parties rather than the Waldorf team themselves. If you expect people to work for free then you'll get what you pay for.I'm not ragging on free presets - there are some great ones out there along with lots of junk.
Whether or not paid soundsets are worth paying for depends entirely on their quality.I'm not interested in wasting my time filling up my Blofeld with crap patches, but my experience with the Analog Voltage soundset for example is that it is 100% top quality and way better than I'd ever expect from any collection of free patches or even the factory presets. It gives me better sounds and saves me a ton of time and effort getting there. That's worth the fairly modest price to me (especially when it's 50% off).
